Window Rock, Arizona—UNITY youth were invited recently to participate in the largest gathering of Native Americans in North America, the Navajo Nation Fair. During the first week of September, UNITY youth joined thousands of people who flocked to the 68th Annual Navajo Nation Fair in Window Rock, Arizona. Visitors to the annual celebration enjoyed weeklong events such as a baby contest, Miss Navajo Nation contest, pow-wow, rodeo, and a traditional Navajo Song and Dance.
A highlight of the fair is the Ashkii Happy Kids Day, held on Thursday September 4th at the Navajo Nation fairgrounds. Navajo Youth from all over the Navajo Reservation joined in activities and visited the many information booths available in Nakai Hall. Students involved with United National Indian Tribal Youth, also known as UNITY, spent the day handing out information about UNITY youth programs including Kelly Charley, Navajo, a recipient of the 25 Under 25 Leadership Award.
As lines of people moved through Nakai Hall, members of the Navajo Prep Naataanii Youth Council, Farmington, NM, handed out flyers and talked to people of all ages about UNITY. Youth Council members discussed upcoming events and answered questions posed by interested youth and adults who work with youth programs. This was a wonderful opportunity for UNITY youth to practice their community networking skills. UNITY youth look forward to attending events in other communities!
