San Diego Local Planning Committee Off and Running

Excitement is building for the 2018 National UNITY Conference in the city that will host as many as 2,000 attendees this summer. About 40 people, adults and youth, showed up earlier this month for the first meeting of the San Diego Local Planning Committee (LPC). The group met at the San Diego American Indian Health Youth Center. Those who signed up to serve on the LPC represent the diverse tribes living in San Diego as well as tribes native to Southern California and other parts of the state. UNITY’s Executive Director Mary Kim Titla joined the group for its first orientation meeting to provide background information and help answer questions.

“The local planning committee is so important. So much time and energy is required to ensure a successful event. Those who sign up to help are doing so as volunteers and UNITY is grateful for that. To help plan the National UNITY Conference is meaningful for a LPC because they know it’s an opportunity to welcome hundreds of Native youth and advisors to their home and they want these special visitors to have the best time. We’re excited to be working with a group who knows southern California best,” said Titla.
At the first meeting, the group selected two Co-Chairs including Harold Arres, Site Manger for the Soboba TANF Prevention Resource Center and Elena Hood, Director of the Intertribal Resource Center at the University of California, San Diego. Stay tuned for details about upcoming meetings.
