UNITY 25 Under 25 Awardee featured in Youth Wellness Summit

The Youth Wellness Summit is hosted by the New Mexico Indian Affairs Department and the Honoring Native Life Program. Their goal is to enable Indigenous youth to share best practices, lessons learned, and to build a network of resources for Suicide Prevention and Intervention efforts in Tribal communities. The 2021 Youth Wellness Summit: Community Resilience: Nurturing and Protecting Youth Wellness, will take place virtually via zoom June 11, 3:00 pm to 7:00 pm and June 12, 9:00 am to 3:00 pm. The summit is open to ages 18 to 25, however youth as young as 16 are encouraged to apply with parental consent. Read More

Spring Webinar Series: Join the Peer Guides every Thursday in June

UNITY believes the most effective and powerful messaging comes from youth to youth training. The UNITY Cohort of Peer Guides will offer peer mentoring in a the five-part online learning series. The free webinars will focus on empowering Native youth to identify their community needs and equipping them with tools to advocate for increasing community safety.

Speaker line up announced for National UNITY Conference

An Actor, Clothing designer, Singer and Tik Tok star, and a Fashion designer have been confirmed as part of the speaker line up at the 2021 National UNITY Conference in Dallas, Texas to be held July 2 – 6, at the downtown Sheraton Hotel and Convention Center. The conference theme will be ‘45 Years of Building Resilient Leaders and Lifelong Connections.’  The event will feature:
  • Chance Rush, Hidatsa, actor in Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon and motivational speaker, trainer, comedian

HILI Resource: Helping Children of Color Heal from Collective Trauma

The UNITY Peer Guides are dedicated to providing resources to Native youth who have been impacted by crime and trauma in their past. We believe Native youth with this lived resilience are the leaders we need to help heal our communities. The Healing Indigenous Lives Initiative (HILI) is excited to share the “Helping Children of Color Heal from Collective Trauma,” resource from Pepperdine University.   This resource defines collective trauma and outlines reactions and symptoms based on a child’s age. It also discusses how to support a child of color who is recovering from collective trauma by explaining: how to create safe spaces for children, how to help a child process their emotions, and how a counselor or therapist can help with recovery. During this year’s Midyear Conference participants will have an opportunity to join live discussions on the top 10 issues facing UNITY youth. These interactive sessions will be available after the general session on Friday and Saturday. UNITY leaders will brainstorm ways their peers can create community change to address these challenges. Apply today for the Golda Cook Scholarship

The late Golda Cook, Cherokee, is the mother of UNITY Founder J.R. Cook. Thanks to her, the UNITY organization was able to spread its wings and fly. Golda Cook provided financial support in the very early years of the organization. If it wasn’t for her, UNITY may not be what it is today. That’s the reason UNITY honors Golda Cook to this day by offering two $1500 scholarships in her memory.

UNITY has teamed up with the American indian Graduate Center in awarding the scholarships. The deadline to apply is May 1, 2021. Read More
