Co-Presidents Promote UNITY at National Conventions

National UNITY Council Co-Presidents, Hamilton Seymour and Sophie Tiger, address tribal leadership at the annual National Congress of American Indians convention in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

The Co-Presidents of the National UNITY Council, Sophie Tiger, Comanche/Standing Rock Sioux, and Hamilton Seymour, Nooksack and Stz’uminus First Nation, addressed tribal leaders during a general assembly at the National Congress of American Indians convention held recently in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. They explained UNITY’s mission and promoted UNITY’s year-round youth programs including the Earth Ambassadors, 25 Under 25, the Wellness Warriors and upcoming conferences. Seymour also thanked NCAI President Brian Cladoosby for his leadership and support of Native youth over the last two years. Cladoosby, Chairman of the Swinomish Tribe, ended his second term as NCAI President at the convention. Read More

Indigenous H.E.R.O Project: National UNITY Council Initiative | UPDATE: Resolution Now Available for Download

Outgoing Executive Committee challenged UNITY Youth Councils to create community projects focused on Bullying Awareness at the 2017 National Conference. The National UNITY Council adopted the HERO Initiative and Resolution at their Annual Business Meeting this summer in Denver, Colorado.

H.E.R.O. stands for the traditional concepts that can be used to live a healthy lifestyle when faced with adversity: Healing, Empower, Respect and Overcome. The Executive Committee hopes that UNITY Youth Councils will encourage others to “Be a Hero” in their home communities to the combat negative consequences associated with bullying. Youth Council Exchange

On August 11-14th the Gun Lake Youth Council visited the Shinnecock Youth Council in Long Island, NY on the Shinnecock Territory. The two youth councils met at the 2016 UNITY conference and have since kept in touch. The visit included a cultural exchange that included a tour of the Shinnecock nation, the youth council’s “Hakame Clubhouse”, a lesson of traditional clamming with bare feet, canoeing, and a swim in the Atlantic Ocean, waters in which the Shinnecock people once whaled.  Read More

Nevada Native Youth Aim to Create Youth Councils

About a dozen Native youth in Nevada recently made a commitment to create youth councils in their communities. The commitment took place at the Nevada Department of Education’s 10th Annual American Indian/Alaska Native Education Summit held last month at the University of Nevada (UNR) in Reno, Nevada. Currently, there are no UNITY affiliated youth councils in Nevada, which is home to 27 tribal communities.
