UNITY Holds Annual Midyear Conference


Native Youth Gather for Learning and Collaboration 

The 2020 UNITY Midyear Conference, held February 14-17 in Tempe, Arizona, brought together more than 450 Native American and Alaska Native youth and advisors from rural and urban tribal communities across the U.S. for four days of learning, cultural sharing, and collaboration. The focus of this year’s conference was on healing, and strengthening Native youth identity and sense of belonging. Importantly, UNITY affiliated youth councils and individuals left the conference with completed action plans for community service projects.

Navajo basketball team featured in Netflix documentary to present at leadership conference for Native Youth

Mesa, Arizona – January 30, 2020 – United National Indian Tribal Youth (UNITY) will hold its annual midyear conference in Tempe, Arizona, February 14-17, 2020 at the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel Phoenix Tempe. The conference will bring together more than 300 Native youth, who will hear from motivational presenters including Chinle High School Athletic Director Shaun Martin along side members of the 2018-19 Chinle H.S. basketball team, who were featured in the Netflix documentary “Basketball or Nothing.”

National UNITY Conference garners more than 2,300 Native youth

Native American youth from urban and rural communities across the nation gathered in July for the annual National UNITY Conference, held at the Gaylord Resort & Conference Center in Orlando, Florida. The 5-day conference, hosted by United National Indian Tribal Youth (UNITY), provided participants with culturally relevant leadership and skill-building training through workshops and keynote presentations. For 43 years, UNITY has offered essential support to Native American and Alaska Native youth, ages 14-24, through various programming opportunities, instilling a foundation for youth leaders and advocates to activate and build upon being positive change agents in their communities.

UNITY names leadership team to support National Leadership Initiative

UNITY, Inc. has named two individuals with extensive experience in Indian country to spearhead the national Healing Indigenous Lives Initiative in partnership with the Department of Justice, Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention (OJJDP).  The cooperative agreement provides funding to engage Native American youth and youth serving programs in a national initiative that builds on the successes of the past efforts and the Today’s Native Leaders program. Over the next two years, the initiative will hold six regional trainings to gather Native youth feedback on how best to support and enhance Native youth engagement, coordination, and action related to cultural prevention, with a focus on juvenile justice and delinquency prevention in Indian country.

The National Center and UNITY Announces Winners of Business Plan Competition for Youth

The National Center for American Indian Enterprise Development presented two students a $1,500 check during the National UNITY Conference in Orlando, Florida for winning the Business Plan Competition for Youth. The contest was held in partnership with UNITY. The competition required high school and college-aged participants to develop a business plan and pitch their idea to a panel of experts. We are pleased to announce that Joseph Davis from Gila River Indian Community and Rachel Arthur from Colville Confederated Tribes won the competition for their idea to create a coffee shop called Aesthetic Coffee Co.

UNITY announces the newest class of its Earth Ambassadors Leadership Program

UNITY has announced the recipients of its 2019-2020 UNITY Earth Ambassadors Leadership Program. The environmental stewardship program (which was started in the 1990s) was re-established in 2015 with the support of the Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community.
