From Mary Kim Titla, UNITY Executive Director:
Our UNITY family was saddened to learn that our good friend and supporter, Harlan McKosato (Sac and Fox Nation of Oklahoma), has journeyed on. He was a well-known commentator who initiated meaningful conversations about issues specific to Native communities and was also an alumnus and fervent supporter of UNITY who used his national platform to promote the organization and its events. Harlan was a mentor to many UNITY youths, serving as both a trainer and UNITY Earth Ambassador advisor.
For nearly 17 years, he was the voice of the national broadcast radio show Native America Calling, whose programs aim to improve the quality of life for all Native Americans. Harlan’s voice in support of not only UNITY but the Native community as a whole will be sorely missed.
I spoke with Harlan just last week to notify him that he was going to be recognized during the final general session of the UNITY Virtual Conference with UNITY’s Eddie Wadda Alumni of the Year Award. He was very honored and excited by the news, expressing, “I’ve done a lot of things, seen a lot of things, met a lot of people, but I’ll always call UNITY my family. I appreciate you guys for thinking of me.” The award will be presented posthumously on Thursday, July 23. In addition, UNITY will be naming communication scholarships in honor of Harlan. Details will be released at a later date.
We express our sincere condolences to the McKosato family.
